Goldie popularized drum'n'bass as a form of musical expression just as relevant for living-room contemplation as techno had become by the early '90s. Though he hardly developed the style, and his later reliance on engineers like Rob Playford and Optical to capture his sound puts into question his true musical importance, Goldie became one of the first personalities in British dance music, his gold teeth and b-boy attitude placing him leagues away from the faceless bedroom boffins that had become the norm in intelligent dance music. For the first time, England had a beat maestro and tough-guy head who could match the scores of larger-than-life hip-hop stars America had produced, and the high profile of drum'n'bass as the first indigenously British dance music made Goldie a figure of prime importance. After spending several years working on his production skills at Reinforced Records under alias of Rufige Cru (the home of 4hero), he founded Metalheadz Records, which released seminal dark-yet-intelligent singles by Source Direct, Photek, J. Majik, Optical, Lemon D, Wax Doctor, and Peshay, among others. In 1995, Goldie released Timeless, one of jungle's first and best full-length works of art. The album put him squarely at the top of the drum'n'bass heap — at least in the minds of critics and mainstream listeners.

A former staffer at the embassy in London, Frenchman Laurent Garnier began DJing in Manchester during the late '80s and became by the following decade one of the best all-around DJs in the world, able to span classic deep house and Detroit techno, the harder side of acid/trance and surprisingly jazzy tracks as well. He added production work to his schedule in the early '90s, and recorded several brilliant LPs with a similar penchant for diversity.

One of the first Europeans to begin mixing American house music in Britain, Garnier was one of the prime cogs in the late-'80s Madchester scene. His DJing at Manchester's legendary Haçienda club provided a major inspiration for the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays to begin adding house rhythms to rock music. Garnier shifted his attention back to France in the early '90s, running the Wake Up club in Paris for three years and gradually moving into recording as well. For the FNAC label, Garnier released "French Connection" and the Bout de Souffle EP; after the label went under, though, he formed the F Communications label with Eric Morand (a friend who had also worked for FNAC). He had amassed quite a discography by the mid-'90s, but his first LP Shot in the Dark wasn't launched until 1995. His second, 30, appeared in 1997, followed by the retrospective Early Works

Björk first came to prominence as one of the lead vocalists of the avant-pop Icelandic sextet the Sugarcubes, but when she launched a solo career after the group's 1992 demise, she quickly eclipsed her old band's popularity. Instead of following in the Sugarcubes' arty guitar rock pretensions, Björk immersed herself in dance and club culture, working with many of the biggest names in the genre, including Nellee Hooper, Underworld, and Tricky. Debut, her first solo effort (except for an Icelandic-only smash released when she was just 11 years old), not only established her new artistic direction, but it became an international hit, making her one of the '90s most unlikely stars.

Following the breakup of the group, Björk moved to London, where she began pursuing a dance-oriented solo career. The previous year, she had sung on 808 State's "Ooops," which sparked her interest in club and house music. Björk struck up a working relationship with Nellee Hooper, a producer who had formerly worked with Soul II Soul and Massive Attack. The first result of their partnership was "Human Behaviour," which was released in June of 1993. "Human Behaviour" became a Top 40 hit in the U.K., setting the stage for the surprising number three debut of the full-length album, Debut. Throughout 1993, Björk had hit U.K. singles — including "Venus as a Boy," "Big Time Sensuality," and the non-LP "Play Dead," a collaboration with David Arnold taken from the film Young Americans — as well as modern rock radio hits in the U.S., and in both countries she earned rave reviews. At the end of the year, NME magazine named Debut the album of the year, while she won International Female Solo Artist and Newcomer at the BRIT Awards; Debut went gold in the U.S. and platinum in the U.K.

Victor Calderone & Gennaro Le Fosse have been in the techno scene since techno first emerged in New York in the early 90s. As Program 2 they produced multiple club anthems. Gennaro was signed to Vortex Records and was a resident performer at Limelight (NYC), when Jeff Mills was a resident DJ. Gene remixed legendary groups like Yello, Orbital and Human Resource. In 1992 Gene was signed to major label Sire Records/Warner Bros. and released the album Robotix. The next few years Gene was busy working on all different types of electronic music. Calderone has been a steady remixer as well for years after Program 2.

One of the most popular Chicago house producers during the late '80s thanks to his massive club hit "French Kiss," Lil' Louis was also the only Chicago producer to successfully deal with the major labels; he released two albums for Epic, and only left the label at his own instigation.

By the 1980s, Lil' Louis was hosting the biggest house parties in Chicago, and he began recording his productions around that time as well. His first single "How I Feel" appeared on his own label, and he began collaborating with Marshall Jefferson on several tracks — "Seven Ways to Jack" by Hercules, Byron Stingily's "I Can't Stay Awake." In 1987, his new single "French Kiss" became a local hit, then a platinum-selling international classic after being licensed to CBS and ffrr. The success triggered a major-label contract through Epic, and the release of his debut album From the Mind of Lil' Louis in 1989. Charting a course across jazz-fusion and R&B as well as house, the LP was one of the best produced by any of the Chicago figures, and included session contributions from Larry Heard, Die Warzau and his own father on drums. From the album, the moody single "I Called U" became another club hit. His follow-up LP, the more stylistically unified Journey with the Lonely, didn't fare as well and Lil' Louis retired from recording for over four years, preferring instead to set up his own studio in New York and work on production.

Martin Freeland, also known as Man With No Name is a British goa/psy-trance DJ, one of the defining artists in the genre. Originally a techno producer, Freeland changed style in the beginning of the 90s and became popular for producing tracks that were more melodic and more characteristic sounding than the then-popular tracks of the genre.

Opus III had a few hit songs in the early-'90s ambient house scene before lead vocalist Kirsty Hawkshaw embarked on a successful venture later on in the decade as a freelance vocalist, working with some of dance music's most successful artists. The group's debut album for Atlantic, Mind Fruit (1992), featured the popular songs "It's a Fine Day" and "I Talk to the Wind." The group attained notoriety for merging ethereal female vocals with the ambient house sound synonymous with similar popular groups from the era like the Orb and Enigma. Also in 1992, while Opus III was experiencing their peak popularity, Hawkshaw worked with Orbital on their second album, the landmark Orbital 2. Opus III returned in 1994 with the follow-up album Guru Mother, which was a disappointment relative to the group's promising debut album, though it did feature the single "When You Made the Mountain." With the group's future put on hiatus, Hawkshaw returned to session work during the late '90s, working with producers like BT, Delerium, the Silent Poets, DJ Tiesto, and again with Orbital.

Born in Yorkshire in 1971 but transplanted to Belgium when he was only three, CJ Bolland received an early education in dance music; his parents ran a club in Antwerp, and his mother DJed there. He grew up listening to the synthesizer music of several eras — from Jean-Michel Jarre to Front 242 and the Neon Judgement — but began devoting most of his time to house and techno by the late '80s. Bolland began producing in 1988, when a drummer friend gave him access to the right gear, and his tracks were soon heard on several Belgian pirate radio stations. He then sent demos to several labels, and finally heard back from R&S Records.CJ Bolland's first production for R&S, the Project's "Do That Dance," jump-started his career, and he soon saw releases from his projects Pulse, Space Opera (with the Advent's Cisco Ferreira), Cee-Jay, Ravesignal and Sonic Solution. His 1992 Ravesignal 3 EP (specifically, the track "Horsepower") made Bolland one of the hottest names in the new global dance community.Bolland made his album debut soon after, with The 4th Sign. His 1993-94 schedule also included production work for Mundo Muzique, Dave Angel and Joey Beltram as well as remixing for Orbital, the Prodigy, Sven Väth, Westbam, Tori Amos and Baby Ford, among others.
