Bomb the Bass - Beat Dis

Classic cut & paste house track. Likely inspired by Marrs - Pump the Volume and almost as good. A Chemical Brothers favorite.
Two more singles:

Utah Saints

What Can You Do for Me (1991)

Something Good (1992)

Utah Saints (Album) (1992) thx to msprim!

Formed in Leeds, England in 1991, the dance-metal duo Utah Saints was led by Jez Willis, a onetime member of the industrial group Cassandra Complex who during the late '80s had turned to DJing in local clubs. While working the club circuit he met fellow DJ Tim Garbutt, whose passion for house music inspired Willis to begin creating house tracks of his own; Garbutt then played one of Willis' tapes to strong crowd response, and together they honed the song which eventually became Utah Saints' self-released debut single, 1991's "What Can You Do for Me." Of the one thousand copies originally pressed, one made it to the offices of ffrr Records, which immediately signed the duo to a contract; within three months of its wide release, "What Can You Do for Me" sold some 170,000 copies in the UK, landing in the Top Ten of the British pop charts. Following singles were "Something Good" (featuring a Kate Bush sample) "Believe In Me", and "I Want You".
.
Utah Saints' self-titled debut LP followed in 1992, proving successful in the US as well; after issuing the EP Something Good, a year later the group also opened for U2. Nevertheless, the duo's relationship with ffrr quickly soured, and despite signing a six-album deal they exited the label in 1996, leaving a completed LP on the shelf

Sunscreem

Love U More (1992)

O3 (album) (1993) or here
Sunscreem released a 12" promo of Love U More on the Sony Soho Square label in 1991, a song which went on to spend two weeks at #1 on the US dance chart in March 1993. They had club hits in the UK with the singles Walk On and Pressure (also on Sony Soho Square) before releasing their successful first album O3 on multiple labels in 1993. Other singles from O3 include Perfect Motion and a cover of the Marianne Faithfull record Broken English."Love U More" is considered to be one of the first techno songs to hit the US Top 40, climbing to #36 (to date it is their only Hot 100 entry). It has subsequently been covered by a number of other artists including Paul Elstak, Rollergirl and Steps.

Psykosonik - Silicon Jesus

A great rave track from 1993. While this was these guys only big hit (besides Unlearn off the Mortal Kombat Soundtrack) its the Ultimix version which is even better and harder to find. At almost 8 minutes it speeds along until it slows down at the end to a pace changing 90 bpm.
Get it up above.

Apotheosis - O Fortuna

One of the most classic Hardcore Rave Tracks. Never officially liscenced as it uses an unliscenced sample of the opera piece Carl Orff "Carmina Burana". Only available (briefly) on a few compilations (Rave Til Dawn, Radikal Techno) and a 1991 cd single. Includes 3 versions.

O Fortuna (Apocalypse Chorus Mix) (4:52)
O Fortuna (Art Of Mix) (6:41)
O Fortuna (Road Kill Mix) (6:03)

Electroset - How Does it Feel?

New Order's Blue Monday gets the Rave treatment here. Fantastic tune from 1993! Complete single here.

New Atlantic - I Know

Wanted to pass this excellent '91 acid house single along. Thanks to Ambi for the upload!!!

Early Aphex Twin

Analogue Bubblebath (1991)
Classics (1999 Compilation)

Selected Ambient Works 85-92 (1993) Also here
More links here

Exploring the experimental possibilities inherent in acid and ambience, the two major influences on home-listening techno during the late '80s, Richard D. James' recordings as Aphex Twin brought him more critical praise than any other electronic artist during the 1990s. Though his first major single, "Didgeridoo," was a piece of acid thrash designed to tire dancers during his DJ sets, ambient stylists and critics later took him under their wing for Selected Ambient Works 85-92, a sublime touchstone in the field of ambient techno.
,
Inspired by acid house in the late '80s, James began DJing raves around Cornwall. His first release was the Analogue Bubblebath EP, recorded with Tom Middleton and released on the Mighty Force label in September 1991. Middleton left later that year to form Global Communication, after which James recorded a second volume in the Analogue Bubblebath series. This EP (the first to include "Digeridoo") got some airplay on the London pirate radio station Kiss FM, and prompted Belgium's R&S Records to sign him early the following year. A re-recording of "Digeridoo" made number 55 in the British charts just after its April 1992 release date, and James followed with the Xylem Tube EP in June. He also co-formed (with Grant Wilson-Claridge) his own Rephlex label around that time, releasing a series of singles as Caustic Window during 1992-1993. Available in cruelly limited editions, most of the recordings continued the cold acid precision of "Digeridoo" — though several expressed humor and fragility barely dreamed of in the hardcore/rave scene to that point.
.
The climate for "intelligent" techno had begun to warm in the early '90s, though. The Orb had proved the commercial viability of ambient house with their chart-topping "Blue Room" single, and R&S scrambled to find useful material from its own artists. In November 1992, James acquiesced with Selected Ambient Works 85-92, consisting mostly of home material recorded during the past few years. Simply stated, it was a masterpiece of ambient techno, the genre's second work of brilliance after the Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld.

Official Opening

Well I've been posting like nuts with only a few people aware of this site. That's all to change starting now. I've notified my fellow old skool bloggers as well as finally listing my site at my main blog. The Freewave. As it gets 2000 page views a day I'm sure I'll see a lot more traffic here now. Feel free to participate if you can. Cheers!

Old Skool on Youtube

Youtube is one of the best places for finding scarce vinyl rips (unmixed!) and for public listening! Here's links to some of my favorite posters there.

If you know a poster there who'd be willing to share their rips via mp3 drop them a link my way!

Old Skool Drum & Bass Torrent

Don't generally recommend torrents, but this former Oink torrent is probably the best single collection that captures the movement when Hardcore breakbeat turned into proper Drum & Bass (and Jungle). These are very scarce tracks and with 2.5 GB of rare rips I'd be a jerk not to highlight it. Should take about a full day to download. Organized in a folder by year 1992-1994.
Thanks to the original Oink poster, regardless if he intended it for public consumption or not.

More Organized Tracklist for each folder is in the comments section.

LTJ Bukem

LTJ Bukem Presents - Logical Progression (1996)

Featuring Singles
Demon's Theme(12") 1991
Music (12")1993
Horizon / Rain Fall (12") 1995

When the acid-house explosion hit Britain near the turn of the decade, Bukem gradually stopped going to sound-system battles and began attending the ever-growing raves dotting England's countryside. He began mixing at them as well, and produced his first track "Logical Progression" in 1990. Bukem soon grew frustrated with a lack of control for his own recordings, however, and in 1991 decided to form his own label, Good Looking Records. Bukem's production style was a continuing anachronism on the rave/breakbeat scene; early Good Looking tracks like "Demons Theme," "Atlantis" and "Music" provided a soulful, melodic alternative to the prevailing hardcore tracks then in vogue.
.
Arguably the prime innovator in the development of jungle from its early status as an offshoot of hardcore techno into the respected, stylistic genre it became by the end of the 1990s, L.T.J Bukem gained fame as an auteur in all fields of the DnB movement: as a top-flight breakbeat DJ, owner and label-head of the Good Looking/Looking Good stable of labels and, of course, for his recordings -- inspired by the lush strings and natural ambience of ' 70s jazz-fusion masters, Chicago house and moody Detroit techno. Allied with the early-'90s rave and hardcore scene, Bukem began working on production near the end of the 1980s; though his light, airy sound made little sense to his contemporaries, Bukem's style was emulated much more as the jungle scene gained momentum during the mid-'90s. While such producers as Roni Size and Goldie gained the limelight for their solo work, Bukem purposely downplayed his own artistic career in favor of mix albums and label-spanning retrospectives which highlighted dozens of artists from his labels.

Adamski

Adamski - Doctor Adamski's Musical Pharmacy (1990)

Adam Tinley adopted his stage name after the UFO enthusiast, George Adamski, and began playing live at warehouse parties and raves around London. He signed with MCA by the end of the decade and debuted with "N-R-G," a number 12 hit in the U.K. Adamski enjoyed modest success with his first release, "Live and Direct" which was a collection of tracks recorded live at a small venue in Kentish Town, London. It contained a short, live version of his first single, "NRG" made the charts, his subsequent single, "Killer," wisely forestalled the (recognizable) samples and hit number one -- it featured the collaboration of his brother, programmer and sound engineer, Mark Tinley. "Killer" crossed over into the mainstream music charts, becoming a massive worldwide hit. It is featured on the album, Doctor Adamski's Musical Pharmacy, with follow-up hits such "The Space Jungle" (which was Adamski singing Elvis' "All Shook Up" to a dance backing) and "Flashback Jack".

Todd Terry

The Todd Terry Project - To The Batmobile Let's Go (1988)

Born in Brooklyn, Terry began DJing in the early '80s while still a teenager, spinning hip-hop at school events and on the street with a team called the Scooby Doo Crew. He increasingly listened to Italian disco as well, and when the house sound of Chicago dropped in the mid-'80s, Terry the DJ made an official switch to house music. In league with fellow New York DJ/producer/remixers Little Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez, Terry borrowed the Masters at Work guise -- which Vega and Gonzalez would later popularize -- for one of his first big productions, the 1987 single "Alright Alright"; the single became a milestone on New York's early house scene. The Jungle Brothers, another crew of hip-hop heads who were beginning to stray into house, hooked up with Terry and the collaboration resulted in "I'll House You," one of the earliest and most high-profile fusions of hip-hop and house .
.
The added prestige transferred back to his own name for two wildly popular 1988 singles, "Weekend" and "Bango (To the Batmobile)," both released as the Todd Terry Project. Perhaps preferring the adoration of the faithful, Terry later resorted to dozens of aliases for dozens of club hits --Black Riot, Bombshell , Bootman, Chrome , CLS, D'Effect, D.M.S., Dred Stock, English Friday, Frontline, Gypsymen, Hardhouse, House Of Gypsies, INCS, KXP, Lime Life, Masters At Work , Orange Lemon, Raid, The, Royal House, Sax, Sound Design, Static, Swan Lake, Tech Nine, Todd Terry All Stars, Todd Terry Project, The, Youngbloods. Despite his wealth of released material, Terry remixed dozens of artists as well, including Sting, Björk, Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, Malcolm McLaren, Annie Lennox, Robert Plant, and Technotronic, among others. The British house boom of the early '90s provided Terry with many an overseas gig, including a high-profile residency at the London superclub Ministry of Sound. His proficiency on the decks became a minor sensation, causing several British journalists to describe him as "God."
.

Meat Beat Manifesto

Meat Beat Manifesto - Satyricon (1992)

After working together in Perennial Divide, Stephens and Jack Dangers (John Stephen Corrigan) left to form Meat Beat Manifesto (MBM), their first album got destroyed in a studiofire. They then recorded the LP Storm The Studio, which got them labeled as an industrial act. Not satisfied with that , in response, they released "99%", which was more techno-influenced, in May 1990, later that year in August, they released "Armed Audio Warfare", an effort to re-create the lost tracks of the would-be debut album.
.
On 1992's Satyricon Meat Beat adopted a more mainstream electronic sound, influenced by such newly popular dance bands as Orbital, The Shamen, and The Orb, all of whom had either remixed or been remixed by MBM. The album produced the hits "Mindstream" and "Circles". However, "Original Control (Version 2)", renamed "I Am Electro" in later compilations, remains the best-known track from the album, featuring samples of recordings from the 1939 World's Fair exhibit Elektro The Robot

Underworld

mp3 link here
Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman (1993)
.
Hyde and Smith recruited Essex DJ Darren Emerson, and after several minor releases and remixes as Lemon Interupt and Steppin' Razor readopted the Underworld moniker. The trio's first full-length, Dubnobasswithmyheadman, was released in 1993 to rave reviews and is still considered a landmark piece of work today. It spawned several hit singles ("Dark & Long", "Cowgirl", "Dirty Epic") and was followed a couple years later by the "Born Slippy" single and their second album, Second Toughest In The Infants (1996).
Underworld really should be recognized as bridging the genres of techno and trance (which was still in its infancy).

Renegade Soundwave

Formed in London during the late '80s, Renegade Soundwave applied the punk and industrial ethic to both dub and dancefloor electronica, in good company with fellow sound terrorists throughout the decade, from Cabaret Voltaire to Skinny Puppy and Meat Beat Manifesto. Equally well known for their skill as producers and remixers as recording artists in their own right, the RSW influence was felt throughout dance music in the 1990s. Genres such as big beat and drum and bass, whose sounds were not defined until well after the release of the first RSW records, all owe a debt to Renegade Soundwave, while The Chemical Brothers have cited RSW as one of the biggest influences in their sound.
.
The trio of Gary Asquith, Danny Briottet and Carl Bonnie debuted on the Rhythm King label with the "Kray Twins" single, their early records mixed together the sound of the then embryonic dance scene, east-end hip-hop, dub and electro-industrial noise. Later singles such as "Biting My Nails" and "The Phantom" became early dance-floor classics, with "Probably a Robbery" reaching the UK singles chart in 1990.A switch to Mute Records brought the release of the debut long-player "Soundclash" in 1989 an album they'd spent two years recording material for, maybe less of a surprise then that it was followed up 6 months later by "In Dub". At this point, Bonnie exited to pursue a solo career (citing musical differences), leaving Briottet & Asquith to continue as a duo. They spent several years in isolation before emerging in 1994 with the "Renegade Soundwave" single and the album How You Doin? During late 1994, after playing their first live date since their participation in 1991's "Mute Over America" tour, the duo released Brixton and The Next Chapter of Dub the following year. RSW formally disbanded in 1995, this compilation RSW 87-95 emerged in 1996.

Leftfield

Song of Life (Hard Hands Mix) (1992)

Open Up (1993)

Open Up Remixes (1993)

Leftism + Bonus Disc (w/original Release the Pressure versions) (1995)

A Final Hit (Best of - includes 1991's More Than I Know, Not Forgotten)

The production team which brought house music back from the brink of commercial mediocrity, Leftfield made it safe for artistic producers to begin working in a new vein termed progressive house. Paul Daley (a former member of A Man Called Adam and the Brand New Heavies) and programmer Neil Barnes combined the classic soul of early Chicago and New York house with the growing Artificial Intelligence school of album-oriented techno to create classic, intelligent dance music. When legal hassles over ownership of the Leftfield name prevented the pair from recording their own music after the release of their 1991 debut "Not Forgotten," they turned to remixing, establishing their early reputation for reworking tracks by artists ranging from Stereo MC's and David Bowie to Yothu Yindhi and Renegade Soundwave. Finally, with their courtroom battles successfully behind them, they formed their own Hard Hands label in late 1992 and issued the single "Release the Pressure," featuring reggae vocalist Earl Sixteen; "Song of Life" followed, and in 1993 Leftfield scored their first major hit with "Open Up," recorded with John Lydon. Their debut LP Leftism was released in 1995.

Stone Roses - Fools Gold

Fools Gold" became the band's biggest commercial hit at the time. It was their first single to reach the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart and stayed in the Top 75 for 14 weeks. The dance-oriented song showcased the rhythm section of Mani on bass and Reni on percussion. John Squire also shone on guitar with its various wah-wah pedal effects. Finally, Ian Brown sang the vocals in a unique whispered delivery. He would also perform with this technique for the track "Something's Burning". The bassline was "inspired" by "Know How" by Young MC, which is a sample from the Shaft theme song, performed by Isaac Hayes. The lyrics reference Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" and the Marquis de Sade. The drum track, though played by Reni, was recorded as he played in time to an unknown 70s funk loop at the insistence of John, angering the drummer at the apparent lack of belief in his talent. This was later said to have contributed to Reni leaving the band.Despite its overwhelming success, the band did not intend to release "Fools Gold" as an A-side. Promo kits originally contained "What the World Is Waiting For" as the A-side, with "Fools Gold" on the B-side. When the press began raving about the song's funky bassline, the band was confused since "What the World Is Waiting For" was a simple guitar based track. The Roses realized the press was referring to "Fools Gold" and they promptly released the songs as a double A-side.The band's manager of the time, Gareth Evans, was also adamant upon first hearing the song that it was far superior to the intended A-side and should be released as a double A-side.After Reni left the band in 1995, "Fools Gold" was essentially retired from the live set, since replacement Robbie Maddix could not emulate Reni's complex drumming loops.

Primal Scream - Screamadelica

There's no underestimating the importance of Screamadelica, the record that brought acid house, techno, and rave culture crashing into the British mainstream — an impact that rivaled that of Nirvana's Nevermind, the other 1991 release that changed rock. Prior to Screamadelica, Primal Scream were Stonesy classic rock revivalists with a penchant for Detroit rock. They retained those fascinations on Screamadelica — one listen to the Jimmy Miller-produced, Stephen Stills-rip "Movin' on Up" proves that — but they burst everything wide open here, turning rock inside out by marrying it to a gleeful rainbow of modern dance textures. This is such a brilliant, gutsy innovative record, so unlike anything the Scream did before, that it's little wonder that there's been much debate behind who is actually responsible for its grooves, especially since Andrew Weatherall is credited with production with eight of the tracks, and it's clearly in line with his work. Even if Primal Scream took credit for Weatherall's endeavors, that doesn't erase the fact that they shepherded this album, providing the ideas and impetus for this dubtastic, elastic, psychedelic exercise in deep house and neo-psychedelic. Like any dance music, this is tied to its era to a certain extent, but it transcends it due to its fierce imagination and how it doubles back on rock history, making the past present and vice versa. It was such a monumental step forward that Primal Scream stumbled before regaining their footing, but by that point, the innovations of Screamadelica had been absorbed by everyone from the underground to mainstream. There's little chance that this record will be as revolutionary to first-time listeners, but after its initial spin, the genius in its construction will become apparent — and it's that attention to detail that makes Screamadelica an album that transcends its time and influence.

Happy Mondays

Along with the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays were the leaders of the late-'80s/early-'90s dance club-influenced Manchester scene, experiencing a brief moment in the spotlight before collapsing in 1992. While the Stone Roses were based in '60s pop, adding only a slight hint of dance music, Happy Mondays immersed themselves in the club and rave culture, eventually becoming the most recognizable band of that drug-fueled scene. The Mondays' music relied heavily on the sound and rhythm of house music, spiked with '70s soul licks and swirling '60s psychedelia. It was bright, colorful music that had fractured melodies that never quite gelled into cohesive songs.
.
Unwittingly or not, Happy Mondays personified the ugly side of rave culture. They were thugs, purely and simply — they brought out the latent violence that lay beneath the surface of any drug culture, even one as seemingly beatific as England's late-'80s/early-'90s rave scene. Under the leadership of vocalist Shaun Ryder, the group sounded and acted like thugs, especially in comparison with their peace-loving peers, the Stone Roses. Ryder's lyrics were twisted and surrealistic, loaded with bizarre pop culture references, drug slang, and menacing sexuality. Appropriately, their music was as convoluted. Happy Mondays were one of the first rock bands to integrate hip-hop techniques into their music. They didn't sample, but they borrowed melodies and lyrics and, in the process, committed rock blasphemy. For a band that celebrated their vulgarity and excessiveness, Happy Mondays appropriately were undone by their addictions, but they left behind a surprisingly influential legacy, apparent in everyone from dance bands like the Chemical Brothers to rock & rollers like Oasis.
