The first Nexus 21 release was "(Still) Life Keeps Moving", a vocal techno tune today regarded as an early classic. They followed this up with their outstanding sole LP "The Rhythm Of Life", which was strongly influenced by Detroit techno, but also included acid house, electro and breakbeats elements. After the release of the album, Blue Chip folded, and Nexus 21 found a new home in the just founded Network Records. Meanwhile, R&S snapped up "Logical Progression" and "Techno City" from The Rhythm Of Life and released them on 12”. KMS released a set of Detroit remixes of "(Still) Life Keeps Moving" by Carl Craig / Mark Kinchen / Kevin Saunderson. The first Archer / Peat releases for Network were licensed versions of Another Night and the Detroit remixes. Then the pair tried out yet another alter ego and released the "Overload EP" as Altern 8. They came back to being Nexus 21 for the deep techno of "Self Hypnosis", their contribution to the Bio Rhythm compilation. A remix of Self Hypnosis then appeared on the "Progressive Logic EP", alongside "Together" (from Bio Rhythm 2) and two tunes from The Rhythm Of Life, one remixed. A second Nexus 21 album was ready in late 1991, but due to sample clearance problems, the LP never materialised. A small edition of white labels of "I Know We Can Make It"/"Sychologic PSP" was released, which showcased a bigger hardcore influence. After the success of "The Vertigo EP" and "Activ-8", credited to Altern 8, Mark Archer and Chris Peat concentrated on that project.

A three-piece combo who managed to make inspired music during the 1990s while blazing a path through most of the popular electronic styles of the decade, Fluke was formed by occasional vocalist Jon Fugler, Mike Tournier and Mike Bryant after the three had spent several years living in the same combination house and recording studio. At first an eclectic, widely inspired house-pop act, the three later moved into trip-hop (and the British charts) during the mid-'90s before another leap into big-beat video-game soundtracks by the end of the decade.

Bitten by the acid-house bug in 1988, Fugler, Tournier and Bryant began recording with two singles informed by more-than-competent guitar work, soaring techno-funk and plenty of pop inspiration as well. "Thumper" and "Joni" (the latter sampling Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi") brought Fluke much attention in the growing electronic sphere, and they signed a one-off album deal with indie-rock kingpins Creation for their debut full-length, 1991's Techno Rose of Blighty. After completing another record deal with Virgin that same year, Fluke released a live album Out (in essence) and their sophomore masterpiece Six Wheels on My Wagon, an album of poppy, occasionally dreamy ambient-trance which included several previously released singles.

Björk first came to prominence as one of the lead vocalists of the avant-pop Icelandic sextet the Sugarcubes, but when she launched a solo career after the group's 1992 demise, she quickly eclipsed her old band's popularity. Instead of following in the Sugarcubes' arty guitar rock pretensions, Björk immersed herself in dance and club culture, working with many of the biggest names in the genre, including Nellee Hooper, Underworld, and Tricky. Debut, her first solo effort (except for an Icelandic-only smash released when she was just 11 years old), not only established her new artistic direction, but it became an international hit, making her one of the '90s most unlikely stars.

Following the breakup of the group, Björk moved to London, where she began pursuing a dance-oriented solo career. The previous year, she had sung on 808 State's "Ooops," which sparked her interest in club and house music. Björk struck up a working relationship with Nellee Hooper, a producer who had formerly worked with Soul II Soul and Massive Attack. The first result of their partnership was "Human Behaviour," which was released in June of 1993. "Human Behaviour" became a Top 40 hit in the U.K., setting the stage for the surprising number three debut of the full-length album, Debut. Throughout 1993, Björk had hit U.K. singles — including "Venus as a Boy," "Big Time Sensuality," and the non-LP "Play Dead," a collaboration with David Arnold taken from the film Young Americans — as well as modern rock radio hits in the U.S., and in both countries she earned rave reviews. At the end of the year, NME magazine named Debut the album of the year, while she won International Female Solo Artist and Newcomer at the BRIT Awards; Debut went gold in the U.S. and platinum in the U.K.

Victor Calderone & Gennaro Le Fosse have been in the techno scene since techno first emerged in New York in the early 90s. As Program 2 they produced multiple club anthems. Gennaro was signed to Vortex Records and was a resident performer at Limelight (NYC), when Jeff Mills was a resident DJ. Gene remixed legendary groups like Yello, Orbital and Human Resource. In 1992 Gene was signed to major label Sire Records/Warner Bros. and released the album Robotix. The next few years Gene was busy working on all different types of electronic music. Calderone has been a steady remixer as well for years after Program 2.

The Scientist, (Phivos (Phil) Sebastiane) was working at gigs as a keyboard player in late 80's. At venues such as the Fridge in Brixton Phivos would play alongside the likes of Break beat pioneers, Shut Up and Dance. It was here that record label bods from GTI Records (now Kickin) heard the Scientist at play. They in turn linked up a meeting between the Scientist and up-coming Jungle Don, Dj Hype.

Between them, creating luge tracks such as, The Exorcist, The Bee and Kick Squad (Champion Sound). Phivos would continue to use the tag the Scientist, alongside others such as, Audio Illusion and Pure Science. With much support from Londons Pirates, such as Fantasy FM. The Exorcist reached number One in the Dance charts. And was voted top track by KISS FM, (who had just recently been legalised). The Scientist started to tour Europe, doing live gigs that smashed up the raves and clubs. Later, The name the Scientist was dropped, to be replaced by his present concept, Pure Science.

One of the pioneers of the belgian new beat and techno scene. He began his career at Target Records (Belgium). Later on he joined Music Man Records for whom he released his famous B-sides tracks. At the same time, he founded and managed a couple of record labels: H.P.F., Mikki House, Two Thumbs and Tribal Sun and made a lot of remixes for different artists.

Born in Yorkshire in 1971 but transplanted to Belgium when he was only three, CJ Bolland received an early education in dance music; his parents ran a club in Antwerp, and his mother DJed there. He grew up listening to the synthesizer music of several eras — from Jean-Michel Jarre to Front 242 and the Neon Judgement — but began devoting most of his time to house and techno by the late '80s. Bolland began producing in 1988, when a drummer friend gave him access to the right gear, and his tracks were soon heard on several Belgian pirate radio stations. He then sent demos to several labels, and finally heard back from R&S Records.CJ Bolland's first production for R&S, the Project's "Do That Dance," jump-started his career, and he soon saw releases from his projects Pulse, Space Opera (with the Advent's Cisco Ferreira), Cee-Jay, Ravesignal and Sonic Solution. His 1992 Ravesignal 3 EP (specifically, the track "Horsepower") made Bolland one of the hottest names in the new global dance community.Bolland made his album debut soon after, with The 4th Sign. His 1993-94 schedule also included production work for Mundo Muzique, Dave Angel and Joey Beltram as well as remixing for Orbital, the Prodigy, Sven Väth, Westbam, Tori Amos and Baby Ford, among others.

Quadrophonia were a Dutch dance act formed by Olivier Abbeloos (also known as part of T99) and Lucien Foort in the late 1980s, with rap vocals on several of their tracks performed by Marvin D (A.K.A. Ripmaster).

They had two top-40 hits in the United Kingdom. "Quadrophonia", which reached #14 in April 1991, followed by "The Wave Of The Future", which charted at #40 in July of the same year, as well as 3 other singles from around this time, "Find the Time (Part 1)", "Schizofrenia - The Worst Day Of My Life" and "The Man With the Masterplan", all three of which weren't particularly successful. Later in the year the group released their first and only album entitled Cozmic Jam.

After all their work in 1991 and 1992, Quadrophonia went on to release three more singles in 1993 called "Intergalactic Crosstalk (Amazonia)", "Moondance" and "Warp Factor One".

SL2 was also one of the most influential acts in the early days of the Breakbeat Hardcore movement by weaving samplings of dancehall, Detroit house, electro/techno, and Drum and bass into memorable nightclub classics. They also played a part in the successful early days of XL Recordings, and even though the act never released a full-length album during their tenure with the record label, most of their tracks can be found on the 'XL Recordings Chapters' compilations, as well as many others.

The duo released their first single, "Do That Dance" in 1990 as a promo. But it was not until 1991 when they scored with their signature 'breakthrough' classic "DJs Take Control," which peaked at number 11 on the British Pop charts that year.

By 1992 the act joined the many rave artists who would crossover to the British Pop charts with a pair of hits that have also become classics in their own right: "Way In My Brain" and "On A Ragga Tip". The latter was also their highest charting hit in their career, peaking at number 2 in the charts in April of that same year. "Way In My Brain", originally a B-Side to "DJs" and was listed together as a single during the former's charted run, recharted via a new remix, peaking at number 28 that summer.

While 1991 was an amazing year for Dance music it also was a year that U2 not only dove into Electronic music but into dance remixes as well. Paul Oakenfold toured and opened with the band on their Zoo Tv Tour and remixed a handful of the "Perfecto" remixes (Even Better Then The Real Thing, Mysterious Ways, and Lemon). This album captures all the best of their remixed 1991-1993 output.

Massive Attack - Unfinished Symphony

One of the most important club tracks. This single from 1991 was a tad different from the trip-hop/ downtempo design that the band helped create. What they did here is emotional, uptempo, and a very classic cut. Oakenfold's Perfecto mix is almost as good as the original.

Formed in 1991, 2 Bad Mice (the name originating from The Tale of 2 Bad Mice by Beatrix Potter) are widely credited as among the first U.K. hardcore acts to begin heavily incorporating breakbeats into the style. Consisting of members Sean O'Keeffe, Simon Colebrooke and producer Rob Playford (who also owns Moving Shadow records), 2 Bad Mice were a staple on the early- to mid-'90s hardcore scene, and were instrumental in the music's steady mutation into jungle/drum'n'bass. The group's influential approach to sampled beats -- cutting them up into shards of rhythm and rearranging them in novel combinations (first appearing in mature form on the 1992 hit "Bombscare") -- is generally considered the blueprint from which jungle's characteristic manipulation of breaks was assembled. Although 2 Bad Mice for the most part stopped producing as the hardcore scene began to wane (Playford focusing his energy on Moving Shadow, now one of the largest and most influential jungle labels), a best-of compilation of the group's work appeared on the American Sm:)e Communications label in 1995.
