The first Nexus 21 release was "(Still) Life Keeps Moving", a vocal techno tune today regarded as an early classic. They followed this up with their outstanding sole LP "The Rhythm Of Life", which was strongly influenced by Detroit techno, but also included acid house, electro and breakbeats elements. After the release of the album, Blue Chip folded, and Nexus 21 found a new home in the just founded Network Records. Meanwhile, R&S snapped up "Logical Progression" and "Techno City" from The Rhythm Of Life and released them on 12”. KMS released a set of Detroit remixes of "(Still) Life Keeps Moving" by Carl Craig / Mark Kinchen / Kevin Saunderson. The first Archer / Peat releases for Network were licensed versions of Another Night and the Detroit remixes. Then the pair tried out yet another alter ego and released the "Overload EP" as Altern 8. They came back to being Nexus 21 for the deep techno of "Self Hypnosis", their contribution to the Bio Rhythm compilation. A remix of Self Hypnosis then appeared on the "Progressive Logic EP", alongside "Together" (from Bio Rhythm 2) and two tunes from The Rhythm Of Life, one remixed. A second Nexus 21 album was ready in late 1991, but due to sample clearance problems, the LP never materialised. A small edition of white labels of "I Know We Can Make It"/"Sychologic PSP" was released, which showcased a bigger hardcore influence. After the success of "The Vertigo EP" and "Activ-8", credited to Altern 8, Mark Archer and Chris Peat concentrated on that project.

Victor Calderone & Gennaro Le Fosse have been in the techno scene since techno first emerged in New York in the early 90s. As Program 2 they produced multiple club anthems. Gennaro was signed to Vortex Records and was a resident performer at Limelight (NYC), when Jeff Mills was a resident DJ. Gene remixed legendary groups like Yello, Orbital and Human Resource. In 1992 Gene was signed to major label Sire Records/Warner Bros. and released the album Robotix. The next few years Gene was busy working on all different types of electronic music. Calderone has been a steady remixer as well for years after Program 2.

When a new style of music first cracks the pop charts, the hit is usually a deliberate crossover by an artist having little to do with the music's original pioneers. The first house single to reach the charts, however, was recorded by seminal Chicago DJ and producer, Farley Jackmaster Funk. His cover of Isaac Hayes' "Love Can't Turn Around" made the Top Ten in mid-1986 — ironically, not in his home country but in the U.K. — at the same time that he was one of the biggest names in Chicago house.

Known as Farley Keith or Farley Funkin' Keith up to that point, he began recording in 1984 with the single "Jack the Bass," which inaugurated the highly popular jacking craze in Chicago house. After two more singles ("Funkin' with Drums Again," "Give Yourself to Me") for Trax Records, he re-christened himself Farley Jackmaster Funk and released "Love Can't Turn Around," with vocals by Darryl Pandy (often mistaken for Farley on the accompanying video). The single hit the number nine spot on the British pop charts and stunned hundreds of Chicagoans, who had no idea their records were becoming popular across the ocean.

"Love Can't Turn Around" wasn't followed by any other big international hits — "As Always" made a brief U.K. entry in 1989, while "It's You" was a local club draw — and by the late '80s, he had lost his DJ residency as well. Fortunately, Farley made a smooth transition to an even more lucrative sport — the global DJ circuit, where the prospect of hearing an American original brought thousands of club-goers. Never one of the most prolific recording artists in a style of music known for single-a-month release schedules, Farley moved into hip-hop in the early '90s, but returned to house by the mid-'90s with a new protege vocalist, Melanie.

Martin Freeland, also known as Man With No Name is a British goa/psy-trance DJ, one of the defining artists in the genre. Originally a techno producer, Freeland changed style in the beginning of the 90s and became popular for producing tracks that were more melodic and more characteristic sounding than the then-popular tracks of the genre.

With a number of legendary tracks such as "Mentasm" and "Energy Flash" to his name, New York-based DJ and producer Joey Beltram is widely acknowledged as a leading innovator in Belgian-style acid and techno. Although his roots as a DJ lie in Chicago house (he still focuses on the style when he spins at home), Beltram's relentless club tracks were highpoints of late-'80s/early-'90s pre-breakbeat hardcore techno, and remain on many DJs' top ten lists as genre- and period-defining examples of post-Detroit European dance music. Born and raised in Queens, Beltram began DJing at a young age, spinning New York and Chicago-style house in his bedroom before moving into production and solo work. By the age of 18, Beltram was recording for Detroit techno staple Transmat and working on tracks with Mundo Muzique and Richie Hawtin for the latter's Plus 8 imprint.

After Beltram released "Energy Flash" on Transmat in 1988, the track was also picked up by R&S, launching his music into a Belgian association which remains to this day. He followed up the reissue with a single for the label in 1992, "Mentasm," a classic of "hoover"-style techno, so-named for its blaring, vacuum-cleaner synth noises and slamming beat. The track was embraced by Belgian techno/hardbeat fans and DJs alike, catapulting Beltram to widespread acclaim. Although Beltram remains best known for his techno work, he by no means confines himself to that style, dabbling as well in house and ambient, as evidenced by his eyebrow-raising Aonox LP released by the San Francisco experimental label Visible in 1994.

Ambient pioneer, studio master, and omnipresent dance remixer William Orbit began his musical career in the new wave band Torch Song. Even while the group recorded several albums for IRS, Orbit remained in the studio to learn the ropes and began producing and remixing for artists including Sting, Madonna, Prince, the Human League, Erasure, and Belinda Carlisle. Orbit concurrently recorded his own material, and released his first solo album, Orbit, in 1987. That same year, he inaugurated the ambient project Strange Cargo, which released follow-up albums in 1990 and 1993. Also during the late '80s, Orbit latched onto the acid house explosion in England and founded one of the scene's most notable labels, Guerilla Records. Orbit's own Bassomatic recorded for Guerilla alongside British progressive acts Spooky and React 2 Rhythm plus excellent Chicago producers Felix da Housecat and DJ Pierre. Through Virgin, Bassomatic also released an album, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Bass.

The last and best of the Strange Cargo albums, III matches elegant sequencer trance and understated organic instruments (piano, guitar) with ethnic-fusion and soft house rhythms. It's the only Strange Cargo record featuring vocals, with Beth Orton making an early appearance (more earth mother than neo-folky) on the beautiful ambient-trance single "Water From a Vine Leaf."

The man many call the godfather of house, Frankie Knuckles began DJing in New York in the early '70s while still a teenager, years before the disco boom which proved to be the first flowering of modern dance music. Ten years later he was in Chicago, putting together megamixes of old disco hits with new drum-machine percussion for an appreciative audience at crucial clubs like the Music Box and the Warehouse. Another decade on from those first formative steps for house music, Knuckles was back in his New York home, working as a producer and remixer for the biggest pop stars in the business. His career spans more time than any dance producer and without him, the landscape would be immeasurably different.

Knuckles moved to Chicago in 1977 and began DJing at the Warehouse, spinning Salsoul and Philadelphia Int'l records in front of a crowd unused to the New York DJing style, which included beat-mixing and the addition of percussion fills (from a separate turntable) to spruce up the sound of traditional soul. In 1983, Knuckles opened his own club, the Power Plant. While Ron Hardy was entrancing a largely gay, uptown crowd at the Music Box, Knuckles introduced the sound to many of the Southside producers who made waves during the 1980s: Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, Steve "Silk" Hurley and at least half a dozen others.

After more than 15 years spinning vinyl, Frankie Knuckles began recording as well, debuting with several singles released on the seminal Trax Records. Such efforts as "Your Love," "Baby Wants to Ride," "You Got the Love" and "Angel" (most credited to Knuckles though vocalist Jamie Principle undoubtedly exercised some influence) were among the best tracks released in the Chicago house explosion of the mid-'80s. Knuckles also recorded for Danica ("Let the Music Use You") and worked with younger producers like Marshall Jefferson as well as future Fingers, Inc. vocalist Robert Owens. Just as Chicago house began spreading worldwide during 1986-87 though, Knuckles returned to New York.

He formed Def Mix Productions with David Morales (one of the other major names in house music) and began working on house treatments for the biggest pop stars of the 1980s and '90s, including Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Chaka Khan, Inner City and En Vogue.Despite the popularity of house in the international arena, the godfather of the music waited several years before the major labels came calling for something other than a remix. Finally, Virgin signed him to an artist contract in 1991 and released his debut album Beyond the Mix. The singles "The Whistle Song," "Rainfalls" and "Workout" moved up the dance charts, though the album failed to connect with pop or R&B fans.

Quadrophonia were a Dutch dance act formed by Olivier Abbeloos (also known as part of T99) and Lucien Foort in the late 1980s, with rap vocals on several of their tracks performed by Marvin D (A.K.A. Ripmaster).

They had two top-40 hits in the United Kingdom. "Quadrophonia", which reached #14 in April 1991, followed by "The Wave Of The Future", which charted at #40 in July of the same year, as well as 3 other singles from around this time, "Find the Time (Part 1)", "Schizofrenia - The Worst Day Of My Life" and "The Man With the Masterplan", all three of which weren't particularly successful. Later in the year the group released their first and only album entitled Cozmic Jam.

After all their work in 1991 and 1992, Quadrophonia went on to release three more singles in 1993 called "Intergalactic Crosstalk (Amazonia)", "Moondance" and "Warp Factor One".

Formed in Leeds, England in 1991, the dance-metal duo Utah Saints was led by Jez Willis, a onetime member of the industrial group Cassandra Complex who during the late '80s had turned to DJing in local clubs. While working the club circuit he met fellow DJ Tim Garbutt, whose passion for house music inspired Willis to begin creating house tracks of his own; Garbutt then played one of Willis' tapes to strong crowd response, and together they honed the song which eventually became Utah Saints' self-released debut single, 1991's "What Can You Do for Me." Of the one thousand copies originally pressed, one made it to the offices of ffrr Records, which immediately signed the duo to a contract; within three months of its wide release, "What Can You Do for Me" sold some 170,000 copies in the UK, landing in the Top Ten of the British pop charts. Following singles were "Something Good" (featuring a Kate Bush sample) "Believe In Me", and "I Want You".

Utah Saints' self-titled debut LP followed in 1992, proving successful in the US as well; after issuing the EP Something Good, a year later the group also opened for U2. Nevertheless, the duo's relationship with ffrr quickly soured, and despite signing a six-album deal they exited the label in 1996, leaving a completed LP on the shelf

One of the most popular proponents of German trance techno during the early to mid-'90s through both his recordings, epic-length DJ sets and his ownership of the Harthouse family of labels.

Väth released his first solo album — again with contributions from Hildenbeutel — in 1993. An Accident in Paradise was a solid debut, illustrating Väth's concern with connecting techno and trance to the concept-album ideas of prog-rock. Signs of excess are generally frowned upon in the dance community, however, and An Accident in Paradise died a quick death on American shores. His second album, The Harlequin, The Robot & The Ballet Dancer, was released in Europe in 1994, but its American release was delayed more than a year and sank much quicker than its predecessor.

Nocturne

T99 was a Belgian techno band best known for their rave anthem, "Anasthasia", which reached #14 in the UK Singles Chart in May 1991.

T99 was initially Patrick de Meyer, who released three solo works under this pseudonym. However, he heard Olivier Abbeloos (also of Quadrophonia) working on the track "Anasthasia" and suggested that Abbeloos release it as T99.

From then on T99 was a duo, made up of Patrick de Meyer and Olivier Abbeloos. They experienced brief success with "Anasthasia" and the very similar follow-up, "Nocturne". Their only album release, Children of Chaos, contained 17 tracks which varied from hardcore techno to more ambient techno, along with an odd spoken-word performance art piece.
